66% of nursing home residents were women, and only 16% of all residents were under the age of 65. The median age of residents was
82.7 years.1
The 2011 Market Survey of Long-Term Care Costs found that 83% of all nursing homes surveyed are freestanding facilities. The remaining are physically connected to or on the same grounds as an assisted living community (11%), hospital (5%), or both (1%). Fifteen percent of nursing homes surveyed have an associated assisted living unit or wing, and 11% are part of a continuing care retirement community (CCRC).
