2.2. Synthesis of Ag:AgCl hybrid crystals
In a typical synthesis, 0.02 mol of [Bmim]Cl was first mixed with 7.5 mL of ethylene
glycol (EG). Separately, 0.625 mol of AgNO3 was dissolved in 2.5 mL of EG and
then added to the mixture of [Bmim]Cl and EG, resulting in the instantaneous formation
of a white precipitate. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for
15 min and heated in an oil bath at 160 C for 2 h, where the color of the mixture
turned from white to a creamy yellow. The molar ratio of [Bmim]Cl to EG was varied
from 0.5 to 10. The as-synthesized Ag:AgCl or AgCl particles were cooled to
room temperature, collected through either centrifuge or vacuum-filtration, and
then dried or re-dispersed in solvents for characterization.
