2.2. Radar units
We used two X-band radar units, both loaned to us by Honeywell International Inc. The first unit was a solid state radar (RDR-4000 Weather Radar System, Honeywell International Inc., Morristown, New Jersey). This radar unit emits in the 9.33 - 9.38 GHz range, has a maximum duty cycle of 10%, and an average interpulse interval of 100 μs. The antenna has a gain of 35 dBi, nominal peak transmit power of 40 W, and rotates over an angle of 160° at an average rate of 58° s−1. Any single point along the arc of the antenna rotation only experiences radiation from the dish for a small portion of time (Fig. 1c).
