Method
Participants
The participants in this study were 12 sport pedagogy doctoral students learning
to train teachers and do research on PE teaching, teacher education, teachers, and
curriculum at one university in the southeastern United States. The university was
classified as a “research university (high research activity)” (Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching, 2010). In congruence with the university’s
human subjects regulation, participants agreed to take part in the study by signing
a consent form. Fictitious names are used for all 12 participants throughout this
paper. Each participant’s age range, race/ethnicity, time in the doctoral program,
and position during their doctoral work is shown in Figure 1.
