A closing chain store should be a huge-tip off that business is on the decline, says Faith Consolo, commercial real estate expert with Prudential Douglas Elliman. Especially if that store's a grocer, as property values are more keyed by food than fashion.
Whether it's a national or regional chain isn't the issue, but it's a fair warning if the store moves to an adjacent neighborhood.
"They're doing musical chairs to capture a whole new demographic," Consolo says. "By divesting themselves of the larger location, they're still keeping a presence but seeking out greener pastures."
