First, it has been demonstrated that noticing and approaching a
particular exhibit is strongly influenced by its position within a
gallery. According to Bitgood (2006; 2013), who has summarized
research on visitors' behavior patterns, visitors try to minimize
their physical costs in relation to the expected value of the exhibits
that they choose to look at. Accordingly, they tend to pay attention
to only one side of a gallery and also tend to walk along the main
track avoiding aisles and backtracks. Besides the general layout of
an exhibition, the visibility of exhibits plays an important role, as
visitors prefer to select as their next stop those exhibits which are
lying in their present line of sight, while their exhibit engagement is
influenced by cross-views from other exhibits
