Prison Demographics
In 2005, State and Federal prisons, local jails, and detention centers held over 2 million prisoners
who are parents to approximately 1.5 million children under age 18. Estimates are that 32 % of
African Americans, 17 % Hispanic, and 5.9 % white males will enter the state or federal prison
system, at some point. In 2001, 6.6 % of State inmates were women, and 4 % of all prisoners
were not U.S. citizens. At some point 95 % ofState prisoners will return to the community.
