species
Macrophytes
C.
australis is a member of the family Characeae (charophytes).
is
native to Australia, but also occurs in New Zealand and parts
of
Asia (Anders, 2012). This bottom dwelling species primarily
inhabits
freshwater
systems preferring cold water (Brown, 1810;
Casanova,
1994; Casanova and Brock, 1999). P. crispus (curly-leaf
pondweed)
is an aquatic perennial flowering plant in the family
Potamogetonaceae, native to Australia as well as Eurasia and
Africa.
P. crispus is a canopy forming plant, which flowers in spring
and
grows rapidly during spring and summer (Gupta, 2011). This
species
also occurs in fresh waters and slightly brackish water
(
Nichols and Shaw, 1986). Fresh C. australis material was collected
from
the lake using a garden rake. Fresh leaves, stems and rhizomes
of
P. crispus were collected from the waterbody by hand. The macrophytes
were gently washed free of debris and aquatic invertebrates
present
using tap water. The material was then divided into three
groups
for use in the different experiments.
