IntroductionSouthern Xinjiang, as one of the main fruit producing areas inChina, is faced with severe shortage of water resources, whichis under uneven temporal and spatial distribution. The orchards,located in oases around the Taklimakan desert, solely dependon irrigation due to the unique desert climate. Fruit productionhas become a major source of income for local farmers of Xin-jiang in recent years, and the acreage of the fruit orchard reached867,100 ha in 2008.
