A study was made to determine prospects for co-operation between 72 organisations in CMEA countries concerned with research work. An important area for this would be standardisation, but this would need a firm scientific basis. The work looked at four levels: (1) scientific bases for standardisation, (2) normative descriptions of ergonomics R & D activities, (3) definition of principles and procedures, and (4) research into resulting social and economic efficiency. Such a basis was created, but work remaining included compiling constants and reference data of psycho-physiological characteristics of man, setting up a metrological base, and unifying the methods, indices and equipment used in ergonomics research.
