Abstract
The paper summarizes recent advances in the culture of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell). Rhythms in egg production, artificial spawning, the role of pheromones, induction of triploidy, nutrition, feeding and growth of larvae and fingerlings, as well as health control are treated. The economics of artisanal pond farming and the aquacultural potential of the fish species in intensive flow-through husbandry systems are discussed.
