The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure
(Figure 6) has both restrictive and malabsorption
characteristics. The procedure involves the
creation of a small pouch of the stomach after
transection. The pouch is connected to jejunum
bypassing the rest of the stomach and small
intestine to promote malabsorption (Brolin et al,
2002). The length of the distal bypass determines
the degree of malabsorption.
