What if my host child needs to go to the doctor?
Taking a child to the doctor is something that can be handled differently within each host family. Sometimes au pairs are expected to bring children to the doctor. For that reason, be sure you have all medical information ready. Your host parents should provide you with the medical contact details and important information when you arrive to the home.
For any emergency you should immediately call 911. But when there is no emergency and you still think that the child should see a doctor, it is a good idea to call your host parents.
Your most important responsibility is to keep your host children safe. Parents trust you to be responsible while their child is in your care.
If it isn’t an emergency but a trip to the doctor is still necessary
After you talk to your host parents, the first step might be to call the child’s pediatrician to try and set up an appointment. When you make an appointment you will need the child’s personal details and insurance card.
