The mixing height computation currently in AERMET uses the morning (12Z) sounding and
the accumulated sensible heat flux to determine the growth of the convective boundary layer.
However, changes in the atmospheric sounding during the daytime hours are not accounted for
by this scheme. Half of all of the routine soundings now taken are ignored (i.e., the 00Z
soundings). Mixing height predictions in the afternoon would be improved by using the 00Z
soundings (in the United States) to adjust the computation of this height based upon the morning
sounding.
