This skill is highly important not just to achieve independence but also for basic hygiene and health. Many people do not perform this task thoroughly or for long enough periods of time. It is assumed that the skills of faucet use and water temperature regulation (see prerequisites) are in place. The concept of "dry hands" (ADT 69) is a separate and easier lesson that is not included in this activity but can be easily incorporated at the same time. Bar soap or dispensed liquid soap, whichever is easier, can be used.
Behavioral Objective: Upon verbal request, the student will wash his or her hands for at least 1 minute, using warm water and soap, to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A faucet and sink, soap, and paper or cloth towels.
