In June 1951, she took over as the Navy nurse Ensign Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific,” singing “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy.” She eventually performed the role more than 1,000 times on Broadway, exceeding the 868 played by Miss Martin (who played 400 more in London), and closing the show in January 1954.
