10. Marco's book But Marco did not stay at home for long. A war started between Venice and another city called Genoa. There was a battle between the ships of Venice and the ships of Genoa Marco was on one of the Venetian ships. It was attacked by a Genoese ship and it was captured

Marco was taken prisoner. He was taken to Genoa and put into prison. Time passed slowly in prison. But Marco was cheerful. Every day he told the other prisoners stories about his travels. The prisoners were astonished when Marco told them about the countries of Asia. One of the prisoners started to write the stories down in a book. When Marco left prison, three years later, the book was finished


Marco took the book back to Venice. People read it, but they said, "This book cannot be true. Then Marco's father and uncle died. Now he was rich, but he did not leave Venice again. He married, and had three daughters. His daughters grew up and married. Soon Marco had grandchildren too.

When Marco was an old man, he was ill. Some of his friends came to see him in bed. "Now tell us that your book is not true,' they said. "No!" said Marco. "Everything in my book is true. I went to all those countries, and I saw all those strange and wonderful things. It is all true.
