Box 1.3On the road to nowhere ... more observations on physical activity
On my (SJHB) way home from work I cycle past the commercial fitness club in Loughborough.
It is an interesting building with a glass-sided circular room perched above ground level. I can clearly see people cycling, walking, running and stepping on their machines. I find it quite amusing as I cycle somewhere with a purpose to see these people (many of whom will have dri-ven there), moving nowhere (literally). I understand why some have to do this (indeed I enjoy my treadmill walking at home with music), but it does illustrate the problems of modern life whereby many have to seek out exercise machines or else they will be very sedentary. I also wonder how often these people could be active by walking and cycling more without the gym,and by driving less.
