Practice implications
Family-centered “carers”, but not a family-centered “care system” generally characterize services for families with children with ASD in Alberta. Our findings lend themselves to both specific practice recommendations, and broad policy implications. At the practice level, our findings reinforce the importance of teaching professionals, across disciplines, of the importance of therapeutic rapport. This should not be overlooked, as health professionals typically graduate feeling that a “toolbox” of skills is more important than relational skills (Hodgetts et al., 2007). Our findings also have implications for the adoption of consultative models of care within family-centered models of practice. This is the direction that many
professional services are going across sectors, which may limit professionals’ time and ability to get to know the child and/or family well. The MPOC questionnaires are appropriate for professionals and services agencies to use as part of program evaluation to gage their provision of FCC and make targeted improvements.
