5 CONCLUSIONS
1. All insulating materials should meet the agreed
temperature class.
2. Stator coils or bars should meet IEEE standards for
thermal cycling and voltage endurance.
3. Stator slot wedging system should maintain radial
compression of the slot contents over a 20 year period.
4. Ensure that a stator coil or bar can be replaced without
damaging the adjacent coils or bars.
5. During commissioning verify that end winding air
clearances are adequate through the use of ultra violet
scanning and that end winding cooling is adequate
through infrared scanning or the use of fibre optic
temperature sensors.
6. While on-line and off-line measurements of partial
discharge are useful for detecting deterioration at an early
stage the importance of regular visual inspections for
signs of mechanical damage or inadequate cooling should
not be overlooked.
