Additionally, we examined
available consumer seafood guides to identify the crab and
lobster species that were listed under the ‘fish to avoid’ category. Of
the total of 12 English language guides from nine different countries,
only seven guides from five countries listed crabs and lobsters
in their red lists.1 Species listed in these seafood guides are, in most
cases, those that are overfished (i.e. unreported) or are caught using
illegal gear that harm other components of the marine ecosystem.
