Patients are nursed in source isolation when they are
infected with or colonised by infectious agents that
require additional precautions over and above standard
precautions. An example is a patient infected with a
condition that causes diarrhoea and vomiting (Dougherty
and Lister, 2012). The most effective form of isolation is
in a single room, which has a hand basin and preferably a self-contained toilet (Department of Health (DH), 2009).
