Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (* 14 September 1769 in Berlin;
† 6 May 1859 in Berlin): Wilhelm’s younger brother was a German naturalist active
far beyond the boundaries of Europe. In his complete works, which unfurled over a
period of over seven decades, he created a “new status of knowledge and reflection
regarding the science of the world” and in so doing became one of the co-founders
of geography as an empirical science.
