Al matrix compositereinforcedbyhexagonalboronnitride(h-BN)withnearlyfulldensification was
successfully fabricatedbythesemi-solidpowdermetallurgytechnique.Theh-BN/Alcompositeswere
synthesized withelementalpureAlpowdersizeof d50¼35, 12and2 μm. Thepowdermorphologyand
the structuralcharacteristicsofthecompositeswereanalyzedusingX-raydiffraction,scanningand
transmission electronmicroscopy.Thedensity,Brinellhardnessandcompressivebehaviorofthesamples
werecharacterized.DensitymeasurementoftheAlcompositesrevealedthatthecompositedensification
can beeffectivelypromotedbyplentyofembeddedliquidphaseunderpressure.Compositesprepared
using Alpowderwithvaryinggranularityshoweddifferentgraincharacteristics,andinsiture-
crystallization occurredinsidetheoriginalgrainswith35 μm Alpowder.Asharpinterfaceconsistingof
Al/Al2O3/h-BN waspresentinthecomposites.Boththecompressivestrengthandthefracturestrainof
the investigatedcompositesincreasedwiththedecreaseoftheAlpowdersize,alongwiththeBrinell
hardness. Thecompositewith2 μm Alpowderexhibitedthehighestrelativedensity(99.3%),Brinell
harness (HB128),compressivestrength(763MPa)andfracturestrain(0.299).
