Vernon Cooray received the B.Sc. degree in physics (first class honors) from
the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1976, and the Ph.D. degree in
electricity science from the University of Uppala, Sweden, in 1982.
He is currently an Associate Professor at the Institute of High-Voltage
Research, Uppsala University. He has conducted experimental and theoretical
research work in electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic wave propagation,
lightning physics, and discharge physics in relation to high-voltage
engineering. He has authored and coauthored more than 100 scientific papers.
Dr. Cooray is the Swedish member of Task Force 1 (lightning location),
Task Force 2 (interaction of electromagnetic fields with power lines), and
Task Force 3 (lightning interception) of CIGRE-WG 33. He holds the cochair
of the working group on Terrestrial and Planetary Noise of Man-Made and
Natural Origin of the URSI Commission E.
