Acute toxic effect can result from the accidental ingestion of excessive amounts of fluoride.
Although nausea and vomiting are the most common manifestations,
on at least one occasion death of a child resulted.
The lethal dose of fluoride for a typical 3-year-old is approximately 500 mg.
If excessive fluoride is ingested,
vomiting should be induced with ipecac syrup.
If syrup of ipecac is not readily available,
absorption of fluoride can be delayed by administration of milk or milk of magnesia.
The patient should be referred to a poison control center.
