Vietnam port authority on the cards
16 Oct 2012
Vietnam's Ministry of Transport will establish a Port Authority in a bid to get seaport development plans back on track and boost the logistics sector, official media have reported.
The project will be submitted to the government for final approval, according to Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Hong Truong. He gave no timeline.
Vietnam is currently dealing with the aftermath of several years of unplanned over-expansion. Provincial governments and State-owned companies have been allowed to pursue expensive, misguided and often corrupt infrastructure projects that resulted in riches for the few, but not economic growth, he added.
The port authority would be operated as a State-owned organisation supported 100% by the Government, similar to a scheme in Thailand, or partially supported by provincial authorities like in Holland, the report added.
