Treatment
The important goals of asthma management are:
•Achieve and maintain control of symptoms.
•Maintain normal activity levels, including exercise.
•Maintain pulmonary function as close to normal as possible.
•Prevent asthma exacerbations.
•Avoid adverse effects from asthma medications.
Pharmacological management includes use of control agents such as inhaled corticosteroids, inhaled cromolyn or nedocromil, long-acting bronchodilators, theophylline, leukotriene modifiers and more recent strategies such as the use of anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies (omalizumab). Relief medications include short-acting bronchodilators, systemic corticosteroids and ipratropium. With most recent and up-to-date studies it has been convincingly noticed that superiority of inhaled corticosteroids is most pronounced in asthma patients. In general patients should be followed up at least every 6 months for asthma control.
