We have already noted that the fixed systems we have been examining are not necessarily inflexible, and we have indeed discussed many modifications of them for various purposes. (See, for example, the interesting way in which Bowers has adapted his approach to suit the ‘ad-hor’ needs of a particular group of trainees in Bowers, 1987:158-179) Obviously, however, such flexibility must have limits, and the observer has to decide whether she prefers the convenience (and perhaps reliability of working within an established system, or the freedom to observe the phenomena through the focus of an entirely ad-hoe system.
