Hyperglycemic action of metformin has been established in experimental animals as well as in human beings. Further work on the pharmacological activity of metformin has shown its hypolipidaemic effect [10]. These findings were in support of the present observation when the present animals were administered metformin in increasing doses. Table 1 shows the effect of garlic extract in lowering blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol in allxon induced diabetic rabbits. Allxon is poison for β-cells of the pancreas; it destroys β-cells of islets of Langerhans possibly by breaking the DNA strands. Allxon appears to do so as a result of a generation of free radicals and causes inactivation of essential sulfhydryl enzyme of cells.
