Bob owns and runs a local pub (small hotel) in a quiet suburb just 25 Kilometres from the Brisbane CBD. The business has been growing steadily for the last seven years, but just barely keeping up with the rate of inflation. However, the pub is located in a good spot, right at the corner of two main streets, surrounded by an assortment of small business. Within 5 kilometres of the pub are a number of small and medium-sized manufacturing and service organisations.
Like most pubs, Bob’s Bar and Bistro offers traditions drinks and food. There are a couple of pool tables and a wide screen TV set to entertain the patrons. It is one of the few pubs without a betting facility, such as TAB. Patrons are typically Aussie battlers and local business owners drawn from the 25000 local residents within 10 kilometres of the pub. There are two other pubs in nearby suburbs.
Bob has put aside some money to renovate his pub, both inside and outside. He’s far sighted enough to want to find out first what his customers really want from his pub before he commits to the renovation. He also wants to expand his customer base to include business executives, families and retirees.
