We enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at Browns to celebrate my birthday. The setting was very stylish, and the piano playing and gentle buzz of fellow afternoon tea diners enjoying the event added to the comfortable and cosy setting and atmosphere. We were sadly given a very unfriendly waiter who whilst efficient lacked warmth, my mother asked about the specialist teas, and as he is a connoisseur of teas I was rather taken back when the waiter said could he point out that they were served in a glass and an additional £5 would be added to the bill. Totally unnecessary to comment in a patronizing tone, considering this information was very clearly explained on the menu. The sandwiches were replenished three times and were delicious as were the warm scones and small cakes, the tea was of an excellent quality. Even though we were light with our jolly chat the waiter did not give any impression that he was happy to serve us beyond the call of duty. Yes, I would encourage anyone to go there for afternoon tea, but maybe the service charge should be of the choice of the customer to add to the final bill as it would have made a celebration feel slightly marred if we had to made a fuss.
