Zhang et al (2009) found that the relationship between starch or soluble sugar contents in culms and the resistance to lodging was not significant.
Our results showed that there were significant differences in soluble sugar contents in culms and leaf sheaths in different lodging resistant varieties, and the strongly
lodging resistant varieties had higher soluble sugar contents than the weakly lodging resistant ones, whereas there were no significant relationship between the soluble sugar amount and the physical strength during the late filling stage.
