or anticipations of what can happen. Harrison (1983) noted that interview studies of highperforming
individuals in various fields have reported consistently that these individuals work at creating vivid mental images of successes and avoiding images of setbacks or failures. This conclusion has also been drawn by Bennis
and Nanus (1985) concerning successful leaders and by Garfield (1984) concerning peak performers in various fields. Earlier, Ford (1969) had made the same observation at the organizational level of analysis. Although these studies
are impressionistic , the strong consensus among them is notable. Briefly, then, highperforming
individuals seem to work at anticipating the positive and worrying less about the negative.
