Since sugars (almost
entirely reducing sugars in ripe tomato fruit) account for
some 50% of the total dry matter of fruit of commercially
grown tomato cultivars [7], the observed decrease in sugar
concentration at high irradiance (N2; Fig. 4b) may have
reduced dry matter accumulation in fruit. This is in contrast
to findings that the final tomato fruit size can be substantially
reduced under osmotic stress without affecting the import of
assimilates [6]
