Emergence of the second scaly leaf was the earliest when bulbils
received CON 40 CD which took less than 71 days, regardless of
the 10 or 15 ◦C given to bulbils after potting (Table 7). When bulbils
received SEQ CD before potting, the 10 ◦C treatment accelerated
scaly leaf emergence by 5 to 7 days as compared with 15 ◦C. More
than 10 scale leaves were produced grown in 10 cm pots (Fig. 1C)
by day 168 when bulbils received SEQ CD or CON 20 CD before
potting followed by 10 ◦C after potting. At harvest, the number of
scales averaged 6 to 7, indicating that scales continued to form
after planting, with as many as 13 scales before shoot formation.
In these bulbils, the two outermost and oldest scales did not form
scaly leaves.
