This may be due to that the depolymerization products of lignin maintain their aromatic character and remain highly reactive; they act as radical scavengers and can therefore readily react with free formaldehyde in the mixture, during crosslinking process. The extent of swelling is marginally greater. However, since the particle boards are meant to be used in dry places, such boards can still be used. The controlling sample with no liquefied wood added has a similar value. The swelling could be reduced through modification of the technology of hot pressing and the use of a greater catalyst loading, thus intensifying the crosslinking reaction.
