Costa’s late strike pushes Chelsea past West Ham 2-1
Diego Costa’s late goal saves the day for Chelsea to beat West Ham 2-1
Diego Costa found the back of the net from 20 yards out in the 89th minute to lift Chelsea past West Ham United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge and give new manager Antonio Conte a winning start in the Premier League.
The Blues took the lead two minutes after the break when Eden Hazard scored from the spot following Michael Antonio’s foul on Cezar Azpilicueta.
But West Ham equalized through James Collins in the 77th minute and were on pace for a split of the spoils, before Costa’s long range winner broke the deadlock and ensured the hosts will open their new season on a victorious note.
CHARMING CONTE AT THE SIDELINES
The Italian Conte, who won Serie A thrice with Juventus before serving as Italy manager in the last two years, gave an animated cry of joy after Costa’s late goal and celebrated with the raucous Chelsea crowd.
The team played a good game with great intensity and good spirit, said Conte to Sky Sports after the match.
There was great intensity and positioning. It was also very physical. I am delighted with the performance.
We know that we can improve and that we must improve a lot but I am pleased for the team, he added.
DANGEROUS HAZARD
Conte stated Hazard, who was a threat from the left wing all throughout the match, was a menace and can even get more dangerous for opposing squads.
Eden played a good game. He has great ability and is very important in this team. I am very pleased with his performance but I know, and he knows, that he can improve a lot, said Conte.
