Traditionally, artists use their knowledge of the tactile
properties of materials as a major component of their
working process. This understanding of the way that
materials behave allows them to expand their creative
horizons. The medium itself provides them with an
arena in which their ideas find new sorts of form
and often happens as a result of very exploratory
working methods.
Electronics does not lend itself easily to this approach
to working. It is completely logical and demands
adherence to specific laws and formulas. Artists tend
not to be like this as a general rule, and a different set
of skills is needed to work out where a circuit is broken
and then solve the problem.
This does not mean that artists who use electronics
cannot be experimental. It simply requires an
understanding of the medium and the implementation
of effective strategies for achieving results.
