Liverpool have already done arguably their best business, by signing Luis Suarez to a new four-and-a-half year contract, but Brendan Rodgers is likely to take the opportunity to further enhance his ever-improving squad.
There are two trains of thought on whether Rodgers should splash the cash in January – too much could unsettle the side, but getting it right could provide the impetus to build upon and consolidate the excellent first half of the season.
John Henry and FSG could see this as an opportunity too good not to take advantage of. With the unrest among so many other top sides this season, this is undoubtedly the best opportunity to regain a place among Europe’s elite since Liverpool dropped out of the Champions League four years ago.
Last January Liverpool added Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, two superb signings who immediately improved the first-team, not just the squad. They weren’t signed to make up numbers, they were signed to add quality and replace players of a lesser caliber.
Suggestions are that Rodgers is aiming to do similarly this January. ‘We need to bring in players for the team,’ he explained in November. ‘We’ve got a squad and we’ve got enough cover but in the future the focus is on bringing in players that can come straight in and improve our team.’
