HDAC6 has been reported to inhibit HIV-1 entry into cells by suppressing the viral envelope-mediated cell fusion process (24). Those findings, together with ours, suggest HDAC6 as a potential therapeutic target for HIV-1 management. The identification of agents such as chemical compounds or small peptides that are able to enhance HDAC6 expression or activity would be instrumental in the design of HDAC6-based therapeutics against HIV-1.
