GPS is currently integrated with the RFID (Radio
Frequency Identification) system in order to locate the
position of ships and the containers they carry. The system
has drawbacks, however, including limited coverage
in the more remote parts of the world, signal blockage
when containers are stored, a dependence on batteries,
reliance on human intervention, and the need for extensive
maintenance. The limitation of remote area
coverage is the main drawback preventing GPS from
tracking individual container positions on land. However,
its area of coverage is increasing and efforts are
being made to promote the system’s flexibility
