Instrumentation
The first instrument utilized in this study wa a pre-test survey (See Appendix A). The
survey was used to determine students’ attitudes toward academics, their interests, their reading
preferences, and their knowledge of graphic novels. The survey consisted of 10 questions using
a format similar to the Likert Scale. The possible responses for the survey were as follows:
Strongly disagree, disagree, agree, and strongly agree. Students selected the measure that best
aligned with their beliefs regarding each statement. The survey will bewas constructed as a word
document and given to the students in their classroom. The researcher read each question to the
students and give them ample time to respond to the question.
A post-test survey was given to students upon the completion of the instruction regarding
graphic novels (See Appendix B). The survey consisted of 10 questions, focusing on graphic
novels. Students indicated their level of preference for using graphic novels and how they would
see themselves using these texts in the future. Again, using a Likert-Scale format, students
answered the questions in the following format: Strongly disagree, disagree, agree, and strongly
agree. The researcher read each question to the students and allow appropriate time for response.
Students were also be assessed using a graphic novel story feature response sheet (See
Appendix C). Students each examined one graphic novel of their choice. Students indicated on
their answer sheet the title, author, appeal of the graphics, amount of text, overall interest in the
text and likelihood of reading the text. This assessment was examined along with the results of
the pre-and-post-surveys, as well as the informal observations the researcher makes while the
students are interacting with the texts.
