Within the manufacturing export sector there have, since the early 1980s,
been substantial changes in composition (see pp.134–7). The initial
accelerated expansion of manufactured exports was heavily concentrated in
the textile, garment and footwear sectors. Subsequently, exports have become
much more diverse, with particular growth in the electronics and electrical
sectors.

In 1994 Thailand was the world’s largest exporter of tinned tuna
fish, providing 80 per cent of world exports. The continued importance of the
agricultural and marine products to Thailand’s export economy has led some
observers to label the Kingdom a Newly Agro-Industrialising Economy rather
than an NIE (Ammar Siamwalla, 1993)
