Lesson COG 64
Task: Answeryes/no questions about reading.
Prerequisites: ADT 5, COG 63, SOC 6, S&L 6
Concept: Using the prerequisite skills of listening while a story is read (SOC 6) and the ability to imitate words (S&L 6), this task attempts to encourage usage, not just imitation, of the words yes and no. Some ability to discriminate between two items is also required (ADT 5) to serve as a beginning point.
Behavioral Objective: When asked a question that requires a yes or no response re-lated to a short story that the student has read, the student will accurately respond to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Short stories similar to brief newspaper articles or magazine articles and that relate to topics of interest to the student, some concrete objects common to the environment that are distinctly visually different.
Task Analysis:
1. Select two objects that are common to the student's environment and that are visually different. Using the prerequisite skill of discriminating between objects (ADT 5), have the student point to each object.
2. Modify Step 1 by pointing to one of the objects and asking, "Is this the [item name]?" Prompt the correct yes or no verbal imitative response. Correct (yes) and incorrect (no) examples should be randomly presented.
3. Continue Step 2, reducing verbal imitation prompting until the student can independently respond "yes" or "no."
4. Provide the student with a brief story to read and ask him or her yes/no types of questions regarding the main topic of the story. 5. Expand upon Step 4 by asking yes/no questions that request information beyond the basic information of the story.
