The full realization of the ASCC aspiration is entirely dependent on its peoples'
acceptance of a commonly shared regional identity despite the region's diverse sociocultural, ethnic, and religious values. But, given the 'elitist' nature of ASEAN,
the growth of the community values amongst the people, particularly the young,
has been somewhat low. This is despite evidence of more positive awareness and
support of the institution among university students in the region (Thompson
and Chulanee, 2008).
