Instead, the research shifted to the utilization of the strong photoproduced oxidation power of TiO2 for the destruction
of pollutants. The first such reports were those of Frank and Bard in 1977, in which they described the decomposition of
cyanide in the presence of aqueous TiO2 suspensions.17) In the 1980s, detoxications of various harmful compounds in
both water and air were demonstrated using powdered TiO2 actively as potential purification methods of waste water and
polluted air.
