Artemisinin, the main active component of this plant, is a sesquiterpene lactone with an endoperoxide bridge. Selected clones of the plantmay produce up to 1% artemisinin. Artemisinin (and synthetic or semisynthetic derivatives) has noteworthy antimalarial and antibiotic activities. Numerous clinical studies have so far suggested that various derivatives of artemisinin are effective and safe for treating uncomplicated malaria. Artemether is recommended by WHO for resistant and cerebral malaria (Wyk and Wink, 2004).
