Two types of questionnaire were developed. The first was a short questionnaire sent to people who work with research and development of new technologies at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The second, the main questionnaire, was mailed to randomly selected residents of the town of Kil.
It was planned that the first questionnaire would be used as a basis for developing a ‘‘neutral description’’ of the technology chains, and then that description could then be sent as part of the second questionnaire. Unfortunately, due to time constraints on the part of the respondents, the first questionnaire failed from the very beginning. Therefore, no description of the technology chains was sent with the second questionnaire, which was considered the next-best alternative for a ‘‘neutral description.’’
Taking a rough rule of 15–5 responses in the two major categories (i.e., male and female) and a response rate of around 20%, 200 persons were randomly selected, and the questionnaire was sent to 198 of them. The age range of the respondents was limited to 20–75 years. Fig. 3 depicts the content of the main questionnaire.
