To examine relationships between HP and other phytoplasma
strains, we performed phylogenetic analysis,
based on the nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene,
using the MEGA5 software (Tamura et al. 2011) with the
neighbor-joining method (Fig. 2). HP did not form a
monophyletic group with ‘Ca. P. japonicum’ strain JHP,
the sole phytoplasma reported from hydrangea in Japan.
Instead, HP was included in the clade of ‘Ca. P. asteris’,
especially in the same subclade containing strains of RhY,
SWB, OY-M and HYPh. To the best of our knowledge, this
is the first molecular evidence of an association of ‘Ca. P.
asteris’ with hydrangea plants in Japan.
